I went to the Virginia NHRA Nationals at Virgina Motorsports Park in Petersburg, Virginia for Friday qualifying. In the second round of qualifying the conditions were OPTIMAL! The temperature, air density, and humidity were excellent for all of the top fuel, pro stock and pro-mods.
The Pro Stock cars went first… just as the evening air was getting cooler. The sun was beginning to go down a the sky was overcast, so the track temps were mild. The cars ran awesome times… all 16 cars ran in the 6.50’s at the news 1000 foot mark. Then the Funny Cars came out and ran historic elapsed times. Mike Neff in the Old Spice Mustang ran a 4.041 to qualify 1st. Melanie Troxel’s Procare RX Charger ran an awesome 309.98 miles per hour and she qualified 7th with a 4.071.
Next the Top Fuel Dragsters lead by Tony Schumacher in the U.S. Army Dragster set a mph of 317.75 and ran a 3.771. Hillary Will qualified second in the round in the Palm Beach International Raceway Dragster with a 3.779 ET and a top speed of 315.49. The rest of the qualifiers ran in the 3.80’s and 90’s at speeds over 300 mph. Four of them ran 312 mph.
Virginia Motorsports Park is an excellent facility and has a nice smooth dragstrip that is conducive to quick runs. I was there last year for the Torco Fuels Nationals and the Pro Stock class had some of the quickest ¼ mile runs ever. If you get a chance, it is worth your time and money to see the Virginia NHRA Nationals here.
