Am I the only one dumb enough to still be runnin' the 7.625"? What setups are y'all using and/or had problems with?

Yeah, I've got 28 spline Mosers and a support girdle. I read an article which quoted a guy from Moser who said that this is good up to 400 rear wheel horsepower behind an AUTOMATIC. I'm makin' around 400 at the flywheel, which is probably about 300-320 at the tires. Three seasons on slicks so far with a best 60' of 1.545.

I know a guy who is running 11.20's with a 7.5" rear. Might be asking for trouble , but it's working!!

I run a QP 9" with a spool and 31 spline Mosers.

Now that's what I like to hear. Although I only run 1/8mi, according to the conversion chart I use, I'm doing the equivalent of high 11's.

I've been running the 7.5 bomb for several years now in a more strip than street bracket car. 3500 lbs 81 monte carlo. I've been 11.80s on motor and 11.30s on spray both with stock 26 spline axles and 28 spline mosers. I was racing the car every week until this year and making allot of passes. My weekest link has been the ring and pinion, I only get about a year and a half out of one. I don't have a support cover but i'm getting one now. My best 60ft was 1.603 I've also been running a mini spool since 2005 after I blew up to many posi units.

From what I understand, on a hard launch with traction, not only does the pinion gear try to "climb" the ring gear, but also tries to "push" the ring gear away because of the bevel cut of the teeth. The support cover helps keep the ring gear (and whole carrier) in place so that the tooth mesh pattern stays put and hopefully won't be as prone to shearing teeth off. I'm assuming this is what's happening with your 1.5 year life expectency. I tried a mini-spool first back when and was told that when they let go they take EVERYTHING with 'em. I took it out after one year and all the blocks were rounded over and you could see what was coming. Make sure you inspect the "spool" when you get the new cover. I replaced it with a Zexel-Torson posi which was a takeout from a 4th gen f-body. GM went to these for the all gear strength over the old styles to put up with the output of the LS1 motors. GM also uses these front and rear in H1 Hummers for strength. It's the same design as the Detroit Tru-trac.

Yea the support cover is a must, The mini spools are ok but you have to shim the blocks with some side gear washers from an open diff to make it a tight fit. I broke my first one and was lucky that the only thing that happened was a bent center pin. Had to torch it out. ugly. That torsen posi sounds like the hot setup. I've also had better durability with a used GM gear over an aftermarket, I wonder what luck others have had...

Yeah, I've heard that about GM gears also. I've got stock 3.73's from a '86 Monte SS. Another factor is weight. Mine is down to 2850lbs w/o my carcass. Less mass is less stress on everything. Also got aluminum drums & wheels to save weight.

I run an 8.5 out of a Buick GN, it has all moser internals 4.10 gear, pro spool, 33 spline axles, disc brakes from aerospace, and a moser rear cover.

Very nice, John. I looked and looked for an 8.5 from a T-type, GN, Hurst Cutlass with no luck. The only ones I found needed rebuilt and were gold plated ($$$$). I see daylight in your pic. What do you 60'?

im running a 8.5" grand national rear end with 500 h.p and no problems yet...i drive it like i stole it...
just blew up the stock 7.5 with richmond 373 gears,,,,that rear end is pretty weak...

Whats wrong with that? My last Malibu I had that same rear Dont spend the money for the 8.5 unless you get a great deal on it I would at least use 28spline axles and a good posi or mini-spool you could spend about $400-500 or less If you wanted to change to 28spline then find a S-10 most of them come with that JUNK YARD items less then $150.00 but you will need to space out the backing plate I think its about 3/8 off a in the axle are a lilttle longer
